How Fire can Spread Easily
Be weary of potential sources of fire.
Fire is one of the most dangerous type of disasters for many reasons but mainly how fires start and spread. The reasons fire starts is not always human error but more often than not is the case with a reported majority of fires being caused by human error and negligence outside of arson. The essential ingredients of a house fire is an ignition source and flammable/combustible material. The ignition source in a fire is usually something like a spark or lit cigarette which must be hot enough to ignite a material. Other than that the materials that are ignited have different ignition temperatures such as paper which has an ignition temp of paper is very low at about 140 degrees F. Depending on what materials are near an ignition source fires can start more easily but once a fire is started, most materials will burn so always be cautious with potentially flammable things.

Water is a Universal Solvent
Paper being instantly dissolved in water.
Water is a universal solvent, but what does that mean? This means water can dissolve nearly anything given time. Think of the Grand Canyon, massive amounts of stone carved into a canyon after millions of years, just imagine comparing that to a flood in your home or business property. Water damage in properties nearly never occurs for long enough to erode things like stone but can easily erode and dissolve things such as drywall, plaster, wood, and any paint or varnish that may be covering it. This process happens when materials are exposed to certain amounts of water for a long period of time and the molecular bonds of the material begin to weaken and deteriorate, and in some materials cases completely dissipating and becoming a mush.
Smoke and Soot from Fire Damage can be Extremely Toxic
Be weary of smoke and soot.
Aside from the fact that we all know, that fire damage can be extremely devastating, the smoke and soot from the burning materials can be just ans harmful. Also aside from the damage the smoke and soot does to your property, it can be extremely harmful to your health if you happen to be caught in a property that is on fire. Smoke and soot from materials commonly found in homes can cause very serious health issues such as permanent damage to your respiratory system, immune system, and heart conditions if exposure is prolonged. minor health issues can be things such as watery eyes, runny nose, or a persistent cough. Be sure to avoid smoke and soot at all costs when in a serious fire damage situation.
Causes of House Fires.
Every year approximately 0.03 % of individual homes bur down in the US, causing an estimated $7 billion in damages. These fires have many differing sources that can be prevented with proper attention and care. Here are the most common causes of house fires in the US.
- Cooking (46%)
- Heating (13%)
- Electrical Malfunction (7%)
- Carelessness (7%)
- Open Flame (5%)
- Arson (4%)
- Equipment Malfunction (4%)
- Other Heat (4%)
- Appliances (2%)
- Smoking (2%)
- Exposure (2%)
- Natural (2%)
As you can see nearly a majority of the reasons house fires happen with human error whether it be cooking, smoking, or arson, these are issues that can be prevented with proper care and mindfulness. We here at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills and Los Feliz are always happy to serve in case of a fire, any time, any size.
Water Damage from Dishwashers: Causes & Solutions
Let the experts at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz assist you with your water damage!
How long before dishwasher water damage occurs?
Dishwasher water damage can occur within just a couple of hours. You get home, turn on the dishwasher, walk away and watch TV for a while, or run a few errands, only to come home and find a pool of water on the kitchen floor. The first reaction should be to soak up as much of the water as you can, because the longer it sits there, the more likely it will cause permanent damage.
Some flooring materials are more susceptible to dishwasher water damage than others, such as wood or bamboo. Wood will absorb water quickly, causing your flooring to warp and crack. Make sure to effectively dry out the area ASAP so you can avoid as much damage as possible.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup
Had a Fire? Call SERVPRO!
Smoke and soot can cause serious damage in hard to reach areas in your home. Our expertise allows us to assess the extent of the damage and develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper level of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process
Different types of smoke
There are two different types of smoke, wet and dry. As a result, there are differing types of soot damage that can occur after a fire. Before our restoration process can begin, we test to find the specific type of soot that has built up. The cleaning procedures may differ depending on the results, here's some additional information on that;
Dry Smoke - Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Wet Smoke - Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Protein Fire Residue - produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extremely pungent odor.

Discovering Sources of Water Damage
To schedule a free water damage inspection today, give us a call at 323-667-3100
If you discover a water leak in your home, the first few minutes are critical. The top priority is to avoid panic and focus on getting the source of the water stopped. The most common water leaks in a home can be traced to the kitchen or a bathroom.
Most all common water supplies in a residence have a cut-off valve nearby and all valves can be turned off with a clockwise turn. If the source of the leak is your washing machine, the valves to turn off the flow are located behind the machine. Do not disconnect the hoses. Instead, turn off the water flow where the hoses are connected in the wall.
In the kitchen, you will find shut-off values for the faucet under the sink. This is also where you will most likely find the shut-off valve for an ice maker, if your freezer is equipped with one. The valve that controls your sink is usually the same valve that provides flow to your dishwasher. In a bathroom, cutoff valves are below the sink and may be within a sink cabinet if you have one. The supply line for the toilet is commonly located under and behind the seat.
A water heater can also be the source of your leak. If it is a gas tank, turn off the gas supply first then turn off the water. The water supply valve is usually located near or above the top of the tank.
Stopping the leak at its source as quickly as possible will minimize damage to cabinets, floors, walls and contents. Within a single minute, several gallons of water can flow into your home and saturate anything in its path, including adjacent rooms.
Some leaks cannot be stopped with an inside valve so the water supply to your house has to be turned off. Lines carrying water into your home come from a main line outside that can usually be found close to the street where your water meter is located.
At SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz, we are experts at mitigating water damages. Our skilled technicians work quickly and efficiently to extract the water, assess the damage, install drying equipment and dry your property to its preloss condition.
How Fast Can Mold Spread Throughout a Home?
Contact us today at 323-667-3100 for a free estimate!
The bad news is that mold can be found almost anywhere, and it thrives off of moisture. Mold prefers an environment that has little to no air circulation, dim lighting, and an average temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Mold spores travel through the air, attach themselves to any damp surface, and then begin attacking the surface of the material they adhere to. This is one of many reasons why it is imperative for a property owner to quickly contact a professional restoration company like SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz if they have experienced a fire or flood in their home and/or business.
Mold begins growing immediately after the spores have adhered to an item. It is not uncommon for mold to begin to grow within 24 to 48 hours, and a mold infestation can colonize within 1 to 14 days. In most instances, the mold infestation has already become an issue before it is discovered. This makes mold spores exceptionally hard to destroy, and it will occasionally return even after the source of the mold has been removed. This is another reason why it is so important to contact a professional mold remediation company for a permanent and appropriate solution.
Mold prefers to grow on damp, cellulose materials. However, property owners should bear in mind that mold can still grow even after a moisture problem has been remedied. Mold is capable of going dormant and surviving even when moisture is not present. While it is dormant, it will continue to feed off of materials like ceiling tiles, sheetrock, carpet, wall paper, paints, wood, and upholstery.
If you have a mold infestation in your home or business, it is the not the kind of problem that should be ignored. Instead, you need to make a call to trusted mold experts like the staff at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz. We specialize in emergency services such as, water damage, extraction, flood cleanups, and mold remediation.
Average Cost of Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration and Repair
Don’t wait to restore your fire damaged home contact our team of experts today! 323-667-3100
Even a small fire within a home can result in extensive damage from smoke and the water used to extinguish the fire. Prompt professional repair and restoration is essential in order to prevent additional damage and problems such as mold growth and wood rot. Before making a call to a professional, here are some things you should know first.
The average cost of repair and restoration services after fire and smoke damage is $2,950. The total cost that a homeowner pays for such repairs will depend on the location and extent of the damage. For example, fire damage to a kitchen may cost more to repair than damage to a closet due to the expense of replacing costly cabinets and appliances. The out of pocket amount that a homeowner pays to have fire and smoke damage repairs might be reduced by homeowner's insurance coverage.
Water used to extinguish a fire can saturate the walls and floors of the home. The water can quickly cause mold growth and wood rot if the water isn't removed and the home thoroughly dried. Soot from the fire can saturate and stain anything upholstered. Professional restoration is needed in order to salvage the furnishings as well as linens, draperies and carpet. Smoke discoloration and odors can pervade almost everything in a home, including furnishings, carpets and rugs, linens and clothing. Professional restoration is essential in order to save those items. The smoke can also damage the home's air ducts, resulting in foul odors each time the furnace or air conditioner turns on. Restoration and repair services are needed to clean the ducts before the HVAC system is used again.
The larger the area of a home damaged by smoke and fire, the higher the cost in terms of both time and money to repair and restore the damage. It's important to start the repair and restoration process as soon as possible after a fire, as the longer the damage is left untreated, the worse it can become. Because proper repair and restoration may require the use of professional grade chemicals and equipment, the entire process should be left to experienced professionals.
Is Mold Covered by Property Insurance?
Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100 for a free mold inspection!
Homeowners insurance covers mold damage if it was caused by a "covered peril." Otherwise, an insurance company will likely not cover mold damage. There are exceptions, which we will get into later. Home insurance policies usually don't cover mold that resulted from a preventable water leak, flooding, or high humidity.
Home insurance covers mold if a "covered peril" caused the mold. In that case, your home insurance policy will likely pay for repairs and clean-up.
Here are some of home insurance's covered perils:
- Vandalism or malicious mischief
- Damage caused by vehicles
- Falling objects
- Weight of ice, snow, or sleet
- Accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam from plumbing, heating, air conditioners, sprinkler systems, or household appliances
- Frozen pipes
Let's take a look at some real world examples. When home insurance will likely cover you:
- An ice dam forms in a roof gutter during a rough winter and water backs up under your shingles. The water leaks into your attic, soaks your attic floor and insulation, and creates mold.
- A pipe bursts in your home and dumps gallons of water on the floor and saturates drywall while you're at work. Mold begins to form before you call.
- A washer hose springs a leak and damages behind your washer. The washer hose isn't old, you stop the leak, and report the damage immediately, but not before mold forms.
These are "sudden and accidental" incidents. Insurance companies typically cover this type of damage. In fact, non-weather-related water damage is one of the most common home insurance claims and one of the most expensive.
When home insurance will likely NOT cover you:
Your basement pipes freeze and burst. You don't notice it for a few weeks. Now, you have a few inches of water on your floor and mold growing.
Broken shingles on your 40-year-old roof allows water into the attic. Water saturates wood and insulation and leads to mold in the attic.
Mold forms in your shower. You don't think much about it until one day you notice that it's really unsightly and you're concerned about whether it's making your family sick.
In these cases, an insurer will likely not cover the damage. Why? An insurance company expects you to take care of your house. That means properly ventilating the bathroom, replacing an old roof, and checking your basement regularly. An important reason to stay on top of home maintenance.
Also, the standard homeowners insurance policy does not cover water damage caused by a flood. Thus if a flood causes water damage that leads to mold, the resulting mold issue would not be covered by your home policy.
A separate flood policy, will cover mold and mildew, as long as it’s not caused by the homeowner’s failure to inspect and maintain the property after the flood. That means, once you can get back into your home, you need to start trying to clean up and keep mold from growing or spreading.
How do I know if my home insurance policy covers mold?
As mentioned earlier, home insurance companies usually don't cover mold damage unless it's directly related to a "covered peril." The good news -- there are exceptions.
Check your homeowners insurance policy to see if there is any language about mold claims. Some insurers offer limited coverage for mold claims. This may mean limiting how much the insurer will pay for a mold-related claim. Or an insurer may increase the cost of a home insurance policy if you have mold-related coverage.
If you don't have mold coverage, you can buy an endorsement to your insurance policy that adds mold coverage. An endorsement is when an insurance company adds additional coverage to a regular home insurance policy, for an additional fee.
Does your Home Insurance Cover Weather & Storm Water Damage?
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz will work with your insurance to facilitate the restoration process & get your home in its original condition
Winter Storms, spring thaws, water damage and other losses caused by weather variations are often covered by your home insurance. Fortunately, many homeowners are insured and can make a claim if they sustain damage from a winter storm, spring thaw or cold snap. Depending on the type of policy you have, several types of risks and damage arising from weather may be covered and you may be able to get help and compensation for losses from your insurance company.
What Kind of Weather Related Damage Is Covered by Insurance?
The most common causes of winter storm or weather damage include:
- Hail Damage
- Roof Damage
- Water Damage
- Sewer Back Up
- Freezing Pipes
- Fallen Trees - There are many reasons a tree might fall, and whether or not it caused damage to property becomes important for the purpose of paying a claim. Different policies offer different types of coverage.
- Ice dams forming on the roof
- Weight of snow and ice on the roof causing damage
- Wind damage (Which can include fallen trees and shingles or bricks flying off buildings and roofs)
- Loss or displacement due to power failure (which may include food loss, depending on your type of policy)
- Flooding due to melting snow, a sudden thaw, or excessive rainfall
- Water infiltration into the home. This may or may not be covered depending on how the damage is happening. Always call to find out what you might be eligible for.
Although not all damages are covered by standard insurance, most of the above items are.
The major exception to most policies is flood damage. Flood damage is not usually covered by the home insurance company in the United States; you can find out more about flood insurance frequently asked questions here.

Prevent Water Damage from Water Heaters
Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los at 323-667-3100 for a free water damage inspection!
Water heater failure is a common issue. But you can help prevent hot water heater problems, including a leaking water heater, with these 4 steps for water heater maintenance.
Avoid Water Heater Failure With These 4 Steps
- Check your water heater’s age. If your water heater reaches its life expectancy, the risk of a slow leak or sudden burst increases. Consequently, your efforts to inspect and maintain the water heater should increase.
- What is an anode rod and why should you care? A “sacrificial” anode rod is installed in water heaters to avoid corrosion of the tank. To determine if your anode rod needs to be replaced, it should be inspected once every two years and at least annually once the warranty has expired.
- Clean out your water heater regularly. Regular water heater maintenance should include removing sediment by flushing the tank every six months. Water heaters can be flushed by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base of the water heater. Note: Turn off the power and run hot water until it cools before you try to flush the tank since the heated water may be 130 to 140 degrees or more.
- Get an inspection annually. Don’t forget to have a plumbing professional inspect your water heater’s shut-off valve and all piping annually. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a signal that more severe damage is coming.
Water heater failure is one of the top five sources of residential water damage, according to an IBHS study. In fact, water heater failures cost an average of $4,444 per incident after the deductible was paid. If you think your water heater is not in risk, keep in mind that 69 percent of all water heater failures result from a slow leak or sudden burst. Don’t get stuck with cold showers and costly water damage repairs due to water heater failure. Reduce your risk with these steps for avoiding water heater failure.

How to Get Rid of Fire Smoke Smell
After your home is affected by smoke, contact SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz for smoke odor removal services to return your home back to normal!
After a fire, the cleanup can seem like a never-ending process. Beyond repairs for items burnt, soot-covered or damaged by water from firefighting efforts, there's the question of how to get smoke smell out of the house. Whether your home has suffered smoke damage from a house fire or from the effects of a wildfire, SERVPRO professionals have the expertise and know-how to get rid of smoke smell in the house quickly and effectively.
Fire smoke infiltrates all areas of a home. It can seep into carpeting, furniture, clothing, draperies, books and even woodwork. Removing fire smoke smell from a home is a process best left to the professionals with the expertise, specialized equipment, and ability to work safely within your home without causing further damage. Often homeowners attempt to dissipate smoke smell with spray deodorizers and scented candles. These tactics only mask the odor of smoke and won't remove it from the home. Smoke particles bury themselves into fabrics, fibers, and other porous surfaces. In order to remove smoke smell completely, items need to be deeply cleaned.
Essentially everything in a home affected by fire smoke needs to be cleaned. Some items may only require thorough airing to remove smoke smell, but most items like carpeting, rugs, curtains, upholstery, and clothing will need a thorough cleaning and possible sanitization. If the items also are soot-covered, we recommend to handle the item as little as possible and trust it’s cleaning to a professional to prevent further damage. When working out how to get fire smoke smell out of house carpets and upholstery, trust the cleaning experts at SERVPRO for the job. We'll make sure the smoke smell and ash residue are completely removed from deep within the fibers and fabrics. Wash down all hard surfaces with a mild detergent and water — this includes painted surfaces, baseboards, doors, window frames/sills and the outside and interiors of all cabinets and drawers.
Safety Tip: Never eat any food or allow pets to eat food that has been exposed to fire smoke.
Fire Smoke Smell and your HVAC System
The science of identifying & eliminating odors can be tricky, so give SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz a call, and leave the restoration to us!
Fire smoke removal from a home or building requires a thorough inspection and cleaning of the HVAC system. Fire smoke can permeate ductwork and linger in the ventilation system long after the fire has passed. The HVAC filter(s) need to be changed and the system should be inspected by a HVAC professional to ensure there has been no damage incurred during the fire.
SERVPRO professionals are IICRC certified in the proper removal of odors. Masking and other short cuts don't work when your odor problem is serious or persistent.
Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional has the training and equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. By identifying the cause of the odor and determining the conditions in which it contacts any surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace.

The Relationship Between Carpets & Mold
To schedule mold remediation, please contact SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz today at 323-667-3100
No one wants mold growing in their home. If you suspect mold is present in your home, apartment, or commercial building, the wall-to-wall carpeting should be the first place you check. Learn what to look for, how to get mold out of carpet, and how to prevent future mold problems.
Why Is Carpet at Risk for Mold Growth?
Mold needs four things to grow: moisture, an organic food source, oxygen, and a surface to grow on. Damp wall-to-wall carpeting and rugs meet these criteria perfectly. After all, the dirt, dust, pet dander, and microorganisms that settle in your carpet provide ample organic material for mold to feed on. Add a little water to the mix, and you have a recipe for mold growth.
Carpet Mold Symptoms
Just because you can’t see mold on the carpet fibers doesn’t mean there’s not mold under the carpet pad. In fact, the only time you can see mold growing on the surface of the carpet is if you have unusually severe contamination. This means you need to dig a little deeper to find evidence of carpet mold. Here are the symptoms to watch for:
- Wet or water-damaged carpet: Flooding or a plumbing leak can result in standing water in carpeted areas. Unless you remove, clean, and dry the carpet within 24 to 48 hours, mold growth is very likely.
- Wet carpet padding: Even minimal moisture caused by high humidity or condensation beneath the carpet pad is enough for mold to grow.
- Odors and stains: Any discoloration or musty odor is a sign of carpet mildew or mold.
How to Get Mold Out of Carpet
Many times, once you discover carpet mold, it’s too late to salvage it. If the mold has spread several square feet, the carpet will likely need to be replaced.
Still, if you act quickly enough and the contamination hasn’t spread, it may be possible to get mold out of the carpet. Start by cleaning the carpet thoroughly with detergent and water in a steam-cleaning machine. Dry the carpet thoroughly to ensure mold doesn’t grow again. If detergent doesn’t work and you decide to try something stronger, test an inconspicuous area of the carpet first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fibers.
How to Prevent Mold in Carpet
Once the existing mold is cleaned up, avoid a recurrence with these tips:
- Avoid laying carpet in high-humidity areas: Basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms are often inappropriate for carpeting. Stick to tile floors and area rugs to avoid the need to rip out contaminated wall-to-wall carpeting.
- Reduce indoor humidity: Run a dehumidifier to keep the relative humidity between 30 and 60 percent.
- Clean up water damage quickly: Remove, clean, and dry water-damaged carpet within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Also, dry the carpet thoroughly after having it professionally steam cleaned.
Hire a Professional Mold Remediation Company
If you find mold growing under your carpet, it probably covers an extensive area. This means you should schedule professional mold remediation as quickly as possible. The longer you ignore the problem, the more you put your family, employees, or tenants at risk of adverse health effects.
Count on SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz for mold remediation services. We assess the damage, address the source of moisture, remove contaminated items, and clean up salvageable belongings. Our goal is to restore a clean, safe, mold-free environment.

Each year, more than 4,000 Americans die in fires, more than 25,000 are injured in fires, and more than 100 firefighters are killed while on duty. Eighty three percent of all civilian fire deaths occurred in residences. Many of these fires could have been prevented. Direct loss due to fires is estimated at nearly $8.6 billion annually. Intentionally set structure fires resulted in an estimated $664 million in property damage. The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your property in the event of a

- In high-rise, never lock fire exits or doorways, halls or stairways. Never prop stairway or other fire

10 Fireplace Safety Tips To Stay Warm and Safe
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz is faster to any size disaster! Call us today 323-667-3100
Did you know that the leading cause of accidental fires in American homes comes from fuel burning appliances? According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, solid fuel burning appliances account for 5 to 10 percent of all household fires, and cause major damage for homeowners. The main causes of fire include: inadequate clearance between the wood burner and walls, floors and furniture; creosote buildup in the chimney; poorly or improperly installed chimneys and improper installation of the wood burner itself. These wood burning and fireplace safety tips can help keep you and your family safe this winter.
Fireplace Safety Tips
- Read the instructions for your wood burning stove and follow them carefully
- Do not use flammable or combustible liquid (gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, etc.) to start a fire
- Do not burn plastics, wood or garbage that has been painted or treated with chemicals. These materials can create toxic gases and can cause corrosion in the vent, chimney and heater
- Burn wood recommended by the manufacturer only
- Put ashes in a metal container with a metal lid. Then place this container onto a concrete surface away from combustible materials outside. These embers may still be hot for several days, so always dispose of them with caution
- Place both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home, and test these units regularly.
- Place a multi-purpose fire extinguisher near your wood burner. The extinguisher should be UL listed or Factory Manual (FM) approved and have a rating of 2A-10B: C at minimum
- Inspect the firebrick liner in your stove, if you have one. Should the liner show signs of wear, replace it immediately and do not use the unit until the liner is replaced
- Never close your damper with hot ashes in the fireplace. A closed damper will allow the fire to heat up which will, in turn, force toxic carbon monoxide into your house.
- Solid fuel units tend to require a lot more maintenance than other heating systems. Therefore, regular inspections and care are needed to protect your home and family against fire and carbon monoxide poisoning
Humidity Levels in Your Crawlspace Affect the Rest of Your Home
Mold in Your Crawlspace? Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz 323-667-3100
What’s the threshold humidity level for mold growth?
When the relative humidity of your crawl space is 70% or higher, mold can thrive.
“Relative” humidity is the humidity level expressed in a percentage of the amount of moisture in the air needed for “saturation” (i.e. the highest level of humidity – 100%). The amount of water the air can hold (humidity level) is dependent upon the temperature of the air itself. When the humidity level begins to creep up past 70% relative humidity, this provides the perfect environment for mold growth!
I’m seeing condensation. What does that mean?
Condensation is an indication that the air within your crawl space has reached 100%. The air can no longer hold the moisture and it’s condensing onto the surfaces, causing the organic materials that make up your crawl space to become damp, which will result in mold growth. Being able to track the changes in both of these conditions in your crawl space will allow you to see trends and anticipate necessary changes.
For instance, if the weather is hot during the day but the temperature plummets at night, this can cause problems for your crawl space’s humidity levels. The daytime temperature is higher, which allows the air to hold more moisture. As night approaches and the air cools, the amount of moisture the air can hold also decreases – causing the relative humidity level to rise. A crawl space that was at a permissible humidity level during the day can run into problems when night falls.
Having unconditioned air below your living spaces makes the whole house harder to heat and cool as well as provide the perfect damp setting for mold spores to breed. In the past, we were told that crawlspaces needed to be ventilated. Now, however, we are learning that crawlspaces need to be treated almost as if they were living spaces. In other words, areas that are in contact with your living space affect your living space. So if you have a crawlspace, what solution is available?
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz can help you dry out the dampest crawlspaces and turn them into drier, healthier foundations for your home that aren’t breeding grounds for mold spores.
Top 7 Areas Mold Is Growing In Your Home!
Mold? SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz is here to help!
One of the first signs that you have a mold problem will be a “musty” or “mildewy” odor. The next step is to determine where the smell is coming from. The seven areas listed below are some of the most common areas in a home where you will find mold. Other visual clues to look for during your investigation of these areas include: buckled floorboards, discolored carpet, new water stains on the ceiling or wall, and/or actual visual growth such as black specs.
Mold Area #1: Bathrooms and Kitchens
The most common area where you will find mold is under the sinks because of leaks.
Mold Area #2: Appliances
Another potential source of leaks are your refrigerator, dishwasher, and washing machines. Check behind and under the appliances for mold.
Mold Area #3: Roof
If you notice water stains on the ceilings, then your roof could be leaking which will cause mold if the leak is not repaired.
Mold Area #4: Windows
If you have condensation in the home, you will likely find mold on the window sills and around the windows.
Mold Area #5: Basement
If there is high humidity in your home, then check your basement and other areas of the home for mold.
Mold Area #6: Closets
Leaky pipes, high humidity, and other sources of moisture can result in hidden mold in your closets. If there are boxes in the closet, move them and check the walls and floor for mold.
Mold Area #7: Crawl Spaces
Moisture in your crawl space will cause mold to grow.
What Is Black Mold?
Think you have black mold? Contact SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100 immediately.
Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called “black mold” or “toxic mold”. Sensational news reports warn about the dangers of black mold and these stories can be alarming and confusing.
It can grow on material with a high cellulose and low nitrogen content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is required for its growth. It is not necessary, however, to determine what type of mold you may have.
All molds should be treated the same with respect to potential health risks and removal. Any mold in your home should be treated with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.
Please refer to ourMold Damage Tipsto learn more about mold and what to do until help arrives.
How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?
Since many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should contact a qualified mold remediation company regardless of the color or type of mold. In many instances, multiple types of mold can exist in the same house or structure.
Understanding The Fire Restoration Process
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz professionals have extensive training and equipment to get your property back to pre-fire condition!
It is imperative that IICRC-approved fire restoration should be implemented as soon as possible after a house fire is out. The longer the delay in contacting a restoration company, the more opportunity there is for damage from water and smoke to intensify. A homeowner’s insurance company should be able to refer an approved and experienced restoration firm such as, SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz. It is surprising just how well restoration works in light of how destructive a fire can be. Depending on the damage, a home can often be restored to its before-fire state. A restoration team has a difficult task to perform, and a great deal of responsibility, but IICRC-approved technicians are well-equipped to return a home to its original condition.
The fire restoration process involves the repair of any structures damaged by smoke, fire, or water. Carpets undergo a chemical process to remove smoke odor. Sub-floor materials undergo inspection for damage and may need to be replaced. Upholstery and curtains are subject to a similar process. Furnishings are taken to a separate location and restored to pre-fire condition. The home is aired out for as long as needed to diminish the effects of odor and mildew, and deodorization efforts continue throughout the process. Through the cooperation of the insurance company, the SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz team, and homeowner(s), a home can be restored and made safe to live in once again.

After the Storm: How to Check Your Property for Damage
Looking for a professional restoration company to repair any damage to your property due to a storm? Contact SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz!
The storms have stopped and the wind is calm. Outside the skies begin to clear, revealing downed trees, misplaced outdoor furniture, and random pieces of debris. From your window, your property appears unharmed. But is it really? What about the roof? The windows? The new siding and gutters?
There's no telling what kind of property damage a storm can bring. Even if it appears your property survived the wicked winds, taking a walk around your home could reveal a hidden problem you might not have seen otherwise.
Here's a quick checklist of what you should look for, courtesy of the National Storm Damage Center:
1) Window Damage
Get up close and personal with your windows, checking for shattered glass, broken panes, or damaged frames. Look carefully for small holes or cracks in unsuspecting areas.
2) Roof Damage
Check for loose or cracked shingles. If you have an asphalt roof, unidentified dark spots could be storm damage. Determine if any debris is lodged under shingles, too.
3) Clogged Gutters
Heavy rains can down limbs, bringing with it leaves and small branches that can clutter your gutter. Check for fragments jammed along the gutter and in the downspout.
4) Exterior Damage
Siding can tear loose, paint can peel, and stucco can break free. Even brick can suffer the wrath of a bad storm. Take a walk around your home and check for any potential damage. Holes, breaks, and splitting are common side effects of a storm. Discoloration of siding or brick is another symptom.
Identifying any immediate damage can save you time and money, especially if the damage is excessive and requires a call to your insurance company. Waiting to repair your home can create more costly problems somewhere down the road.
How Can You Protect Your Home from Storm Water?
Let SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz help you be, "Ready for Whatever Happens"
During a storm, you can go outside and observe how the water flows. Take note of the different grades and slopes and whether they divert the flowing water away from your home. Look for any low spots that collect or pool water and for any steep slopes that have indications of surface erosion.
Consider the steps needed to protect your property from water runoff. Rain that falls on roofs, driveways, patios, roads and other impervious areas moves across the ground surface at greater speeds. The property adjacent to these areas could be more susceptible to damage. Frozen soil can also increase risk of damage by preventing water from being absorbed by the soil. Replacing impervious areas with pervious surfaces, such as permeable paving stones or pavers, can also help.
Other questions you might consider:
Is storm water that falls on impervious surfaces diverted away from your house? This is the work of things like roof gutter downspouts, driveways, walkways and patios. Runoff from these surfaces should be directed to an area that has the ability to absorb or slow the surface flow, such as landscaped areas, and away from your house.
Does your driveway or other impervious surface have a negative pitch back toward the house? Consider installing trench drains or area drains to help prevent pooling and divert water away from the house.
Do you have retaining walls on your property? If so, it is important that the walls have a drainage system in place to alleviate pressure behind the wall. Periodically clean weep holes to ensure they are not clogged. Surface water should not be allowed to cascade over the top of the wall and instead should be diverted to the end of the wall or around it.
Is a portion of your house below ground level, such as a basement? Make sure any sewer and water lines, or any other pipes or lines that penetrate subsurface walls, and foundation cracks are properly sealed. Basements that are prone to water intrusion should have a water collection system in place, such as a sump pump system.
Do you have a sewer or septic system and property with known high water tables? Have the system checked by a professional. If the groundwater rises too high, it can affect the efficiency and operation of the system. In some cases, this may lead to sewer back up or waste leaching above the ground or back into the house.
Make sure that your house exterior is maintained, including roofing, flashings, weather barriers, windows, doors and sealants.
While you cannot prevent against all damage from storm water runoff during large acts of nature, these steps can help protect your home when storms do hit.

How to Claim Insurance for Water Damage
Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100, a restoration company you can trust!
Flooding and water damage are not things that most home owners ever expect to face. However, when it happens, you will probably be at a loss for how to deal with it, especially when it comes to insurance.
Should the unthinkable happen, the following will help walk you through to file a claim:
- Review Your Coverage
Review all of your insurance documentation. Locate the contact number for your insurance company’s claims office. If you cannot find it on the paperwork, then it should be on their website. When you call, have your policy in front of you for reference.
- Be Calm
Make sure you are not emotional before you call. You need to be able to talk to the adjuster (the insurance representative who will discuss the details with you) in a way that is clear and concise. You won’t be able to do that if you are obviously upset.
- Keep Your Details Short
Just give the adjuster the facts. Unless they ask for details, keep it as short as possible, giving them only the information they need to properly understand the situation. There are rules and regulations that govern insurance coverage, so you don’t need to try to persuade the adjuster over the phone.
- Have Proof
Pictures of your dishwasher overflowing or flooding around a door are definitely proof that can be used to help make your case. Receipt from a plumber or information from the city or county about the cause of the damage will also be very helpful in getting the claim processed.
If you need to mitigate the damage (stop it from getting worse), the insurance company may make a recommendation for a company. It is ONLY a recommendation, so you can contact another restoration company if you prefer.

Water Damage is NOT a DIY Job
Water Damage? Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz to get the job done right
Despite the magazines, television shows, and Internet articles that may have you thinking otherwise, water damage restoration is a job that should only be performed by certified professionals. SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz technicians not only have the know-how to get the job done right, but they also have the specialized tools needed to thoroughly dry your home, preventing further damage and even mold.
Additional benefits of hiring a professional water damage restoration company:
- Health Hazards: Depending on the source of the water damage, safety can become a concern. There are three varying degrees of water damage, ranging from clean water to black water, each more hazardous than the next. Black water, the most dangerous of the three, is water that has come into contact with fecal matter, a haven for harmful bacteria and disease-causing pathogens.
- Hidden Damage: Water damage is not always obvious. Sometimes it is found inside walls and under flooring. If you attempt a DIY restoration and fail to diagnose hidden damage, the resulting issues could be extreme…and expensive.
- Peace of Mind: Hiring a professional restoration company gives you the peace of mind knowing you have done everything in your power to rectify the situation.

Mold in Winter
Got Mold? Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100
When temperatures start to drop, homeowners tend to stop worrying about mold and direct their attention toward household issues that are more commonly associated with cold weather. However, mold can develop in winter as well. While mold thrives in warm, humid environments, the primary contributor to mold growth is moisture, which can get out of hand at any time of year.
Excessive indoor moisture can be caused by a number of issues; water damage, plumbing leaks, leaky roofs, high indoor humidity, and condensation are potential concerns.
Condensation on and around windows, in particular, is normal and may seem harmless, but it is one of the biggest moisture culprits when it’s cold outside but warm inside—as is typically the case during winter.
Window condensation occurs when moisture in the warm air inside your home liquefies upon contact with glass or other surfaces that are drastically cooler due to freezing outdoor temperatures. High humidity contributes to this process because there is excess moisture in the air.
While minor condensation doesn’t usually lead to problems, it is important to dry window surfaces regularly to keep condensation from accumulating and being absorbed by the wood and drywall around the windows. Mold feeds on such organic materials and can develop in as little as 24 hours. Mold Prevent specializes in attic mold remediation. If you are in need of mold removal services, SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz can help!

Commercial fire damage can cause tremendous problems for your business. Though it may start relatively small, all types of fire damage carry hidden consequences, and if you are not careful, you may end up causing significant damage to your property. Fortunately, however, you can contact reliable experts to help you get your damage under control. Being aware of the repair process can help you understand what to tell the experts when it's time to take care of the damage.
Before the professionals can begin looking into any repair procedures; they will arrive at your property and take a look at the area to determine what the damage is like. This inspection is usually thorough, but the experts may need to take their time in particularly extensive instances of wear and tear. After the inspection, the specialists begin drawing up their plans. You can ask them about the necessary procedures, and they will be more than happy to answer any questions that you might have about the repair process.
After agreeing upon the procedures and schedules, the experts will prepare their equipment and come to your property at a later time. When they arrive, they will close off the area and make all the necessary preparations to begin the cleaning. The initial cleaning is relatively quick and paves the way for future procedures. Professionals will take care of surface damage by removing burnt sections and damaged equipment. It is strongly recommended for homeowners to clean up the area ahead of time to speed up the process for the professionals.
Often, the most difficult part of any cleanup procedure is taking care of the scent in the area. Burnt odors may linger in the air, causing damage to the property's surface on a microscopic level. No matter the extent of the damage, experts will take care of the scent by utilizing advanced cleaning technology. They permanently remove the presence of all odors in the area, making sure that there is no moisture damage around the sections of the property that did not sustain direct fire damage.
Final Restoration Steps
Once the odors are taken care of and the surrounding area appears clean, the professional’s then move on to the last step in addressing commercial fire damage. They survey the area and make sure that they did not miss any details. If there is serious structural damage to the property, the professionals may make the necessary repairs themselves or provide you with the contact information of experts who can help. The specialists take their time to address all details because lingering smoke and fire damage may result in future problems.
SERVPRO in Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz is a locally owned business, and our experts always strive to provide our customers with efficient work and quality service. No matter the extent of the fire damage your property has suffered, we are ready to work with you and do our best to restore your area back to its desired state.
Facts on Toxic Mold
Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100 for all of your Mold Remediation needs!
Mold is just a fact of life. It can't completely be escaped, as there's always a little bit around in the air where we go. With that said, there are risks associated with mold, as you well know for things like food and wood. While these are troublesome, there's also a type of mold that contains something called mycotoxins that can actually cause some severe health problems for people such as memory loss or a pulmonary hemorrhage. Common sense is generally the best way to prevent mold from growing and to deal with any problems associated with existing mold, but let's take a closer look at some common mold questions to see what the proper course of action is.
It's very normal for a home or even a business to be inhabited by mold. It grows just about anywhere as long as there is moisture.
How Do Molds Get There?
Molds are a natural part of just about any indoor environment. They generally enter into the premises through windows, doors, or even ventilation systems. Spores that come from outside can easily attach to both people and animals, which makes excellent vehicles to get inside.
Understanding Stachybotrys Chartarum
Stachybotrys Chartarum is a dark green or even black colored mold that will generally grow on things such as gypsum or fiber board, paper, dust, or even lint due to its preference for materials with high cellulose and low nitrogen. It requires regular moisture such as from leaks or high humidity.
Do I Have to Leave My Home?
If you think you are sick because of mold present in your home, then you may consider vacating until the problem is resolved.
Am I at Risk?
Generally, people with allergies can be a bit more sensitive to mold, but anyone can be affected by it.
How to Check for Mold
Mold is oftentimes identified by simply being seen or smelled.
The Potential Risk to Health
Just because you've been exposed to mold, it does not mean that you may be at risk for health problems. There are some people that are more sensitive to standard mold and some mold that is much more harmful than other types, however.

Over the past couple years, flooding has been a major problem in and around the Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz area. Storms can roll through bringing strong winds, thunder and lightning, and torrential rain. The large amount of rain is not absorbed by the ground quick enough, so the water runs off and accumulates in low-lying areas. Water will also run into creeks, rivers, and ponds causing them to swell, which means that the water levels to rise. Both bodies of water and low-lying areas can quickly accumulate water and the water can rise very fast.
If the forecast is calling for heavy rain, it is a good idea to stay up-to-date on the threat level. A flood or flash flood warning means that flooding is possible and you should be prepared to possibly carry out your emergency plan. A flood or flash flood watch means that flooding is occurring or will occur soon. If your home or business is prone to flooding, you will be told to evacuate the area.
When planning for an emergency, the first step is getting basic supplies together. Some of these items include water, canned food, first aid supplies, and batteries for radios and flashlights. These items should be kept together in a separate area from where they would usually be stored, and everyone in your home or office should know where it is located in the event that an emergency were to occur. It is also a good idea to keep important documents – birth certificates, medical records, insurance cards - in this box/area. If a flood warning is issued, fill your gas tank and move your emergency items into your car. If you do not own a car, make arrangements with family, friends, or neighbors for transportation. Gather family and pets, if possible. If your pets will not fit in a car with you, or if you own livestock and are unable take them, find a safe area to move them to. You should also adjust refrigerator thermostats to the coolest possible temperature in case the power goes out.
If you are told that you need to evacuate your home or business, you should leave as soon as possible; never ignore this order! It is advised to turn off your water, electricity, and gas and to unplug appliances, if you have time, to reduce the possibility of additional damage occurring to your home. Those of us who have grown up in the area, have heard the saying a thousand times – “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”. Don’t ever attempt to walk or drive through flood waters. You cannot be sure of how deep the water actually is, nor can you properly gauge the strength of the moving water.
Flooding is common in our area and being prepared is essential to avoid making a bad situation worse. If your home or business experiences flood or water damage, call our team in green!
With spring showers on the way, experts say local homeowners should start looking into how to prevent water damage now.
If you have any further questions/concerns or if you have water damage, call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz . (323) 667-3100.
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz has released these tips on how to protect homes from heavy rain and flooding:
- Inspect sump pumps – a sump pump removes water that accumulates underneath a home and is one of the best defenses against flooded basements and subsequent costly repairs. All too often, though, homeowners don’t find out their sump pump is not working properly until it’s too late and spring showers are already wreaking havoc on your home. It is recommended that you inspect your sump pump each spring to ensure it’s working properly.
- Clean gutters and downspouts – leaves and debris from spring storms can lead to clogged gutters and downspouts, and the number one cause of basement flooding is roofs not draining properly. Cleaning your gutters each spring is an inexpensive way to make sure your home is ready for the rain to come. Also, check that downspouts extend away from the home’s foundation by at least three feet, this will help effectively move rain water away from the home.
- Consider back-flow valves – sewer back-flow valves are small, inexpensive parts that are installed in sewer drainage lines to help regulate water flow. These small valves can save big headaches by preventing sewer water from entering a basement during heavy rain and go a long way to making your basement flood proof.
- Check for basement leaks – take a few minutes this weekend to inspect both the interior and exterior of your home’s foundation, walls, floors and windows for any cracks that may have developed during the winter months. Even a minor crack can lead to major water damage during a heavy spring shower. You can use a basic waterproof epoxy and a paintbrush or putty knife to patch any small cracks you find.

Protect Your Home and Valuables from Water Damage
Look out for signs of water damage to your home & protect your valuables!
Whether you are purchasing a home or renting it, there are numerous things that people should pay close attention to, especially if they want to protect its value. Though there are many different types of problems that can compromise its overall structure, one of the most expensive and horrific is water damage. Because water damage can occur in a wide variety of ways, it is essential for everyone to be familiar with what the symptoms are as early as possible, to minimize all of the damages. To that end, here are a few common symptoms that the owners and those that rent should recognize as early as possible.
Leaks in the Roof
As mentioned, there are many different signs of water damage in and surrounding a home. One of the most notable involves leaks in the roof. Initially, these leaks may start off small but can also become vast as time passes. These water leaks can also lead to brown spotted discoloring on the roof as well as holes that people can see through. Therefore, it is essential for the individual to review the roofing as soon as possible for a professional to examine and repair before further damage occurs. In some cases, the water damage can be so severe that it can impact the structure of the home.
Bubbles in the Walls
Other signs of water damage are also visible to the naked eye. Because water damage can be found in the walls of a home and in the floor boards, it is not uncommon for the walls to reflect a certain amount of damage too. For those who have an opportunity to see water damage spread, they should be able to recall seeing the walls of the home puckering up with defects like bubbles that can be seen on top of its surface.
Leaks in the roof and bubbles in the wall may appear because of storm damage. However, water damage in a home is not limited to thunderstorms and rain but may also include flooding on the property too. So when the water rises too high, people may see wet carpeting that can eventually lead to mold damage if the water is not quickly extracted.
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz is a leader in the water damage industry, we have advanced training and expertise, not to mention a tremendous amount of hands-on experience. We use this training and experience to quickly dry your home and restore it back to pre-water damage condition.
Understanding the Different Types of Smoke
If your home or business suffers fire or smoke damage, contact SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100
The damage to your property following a fire can often be complicated due to the unique behavior of smoke. There are two different types of smoke-wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. The SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz Professionals are thoroughly trained in fire cleanup and restoration and know the different types of smoke and their behavior patterns. Knowing this information is vital to proper restoration. Before restoration begins, The SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz Professionals will survey the loss to determine the extent of impact from fire, smoke, heat, and moisture on the building materials and contents. The soot will then be tested to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. Pretesting determines the proper cleaning method and allows the SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz Professionals to focus on saving your precious items.
The SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz Professionals know smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. Their knowledge of building systems helps them investigate how far smoke damage may have spread. The following are additional facts you may not know about smoke.
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different types of Smoke
- Wet Smoke (Plastic and Rubber) - Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean
- Dry Smoke (Paper and Wood) – Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
- Protein Fire Residue (Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire) – Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
- Fuel Oil Soot (Furnace Puff Backs) – While “puff backs” can create havoc for homeowners, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly.
- Other Types (Tear gas, fingerprint powder and fire extinguisher residue) – Special loss situations require special care.
The SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz Professionals are trained to handle even the toughest losses.
The Harmful Effects of Smoke and Fire
Contact us today at (323) 667-3100 and learn more about our Fire Clean Up & Restoration Services.
During a fire, smoke inhalation is one of the most dangerous effects that incapacitates people. The materials that our furniture, clothing and other items are made of can produce dangerous residue. As a fire spreads inside a building, it will produce two life-threatening events - consume most of the breathable oxygen and create toxic gasses.
Not only will fire damage affect structures, but it is also quite lethal to people. Smoke contains tiny particles that are harmful in their own way. These include vapors which are inhaled or absorbed through the skin and that act as poison within the body. Minute particles of our burning property are so tiny that they penetrate our respiratory and digestive system. These minute particles are so small; they enter our lungs, as well as cause irritation to our eyes.
Toxic gasses are a part of the characteristics of smoke. These gasses are the most deadly substances anywhere, consisting of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, cyanide and phosgene which is formed when products like vinyl are burned. These gasses also absorb the air we are trying to breathe, either by consuming it or by displacing it with other elements.
Smoke inhalation prevention measures can be taken that includes having smoke detectors in every room of a home or office. Also, invest in carbon monoxide detectors which should be placed in areas that are at risk for carbon monoxide exposure. Fire damage is always a devastating experience for you and the family.
Feelings of confusion and stress are common. This is not the time to work with uncaring professionals. When SERVPRO arrives, we always treat people with great empathy and above all – respect! We will also treat your property and belongings with great care.
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz are experts in fire, water and mold remediation. We are locally owned and operated, so that when you call us, we arrive very quickly and are ready to work for you.
You Need the Best Results When Your Business Experiences Commercial Water Damage
Water Damage to your business? Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at (323) 667-3100 any time, day or night, 365 days a year.
We know that your main concern is getting your business operations back to normal as soon as possible after any catastrophe, but commercial water damage is much more complex than most problems experienced by businesses today. Categories of water can quickly change from non-hazardous to very dangerous quickly. Water can spread in almost any direction, including up if conditions are right, and remaining flood waters can instantaneously ruin some certain products with even minute amounts.
Commercial water damage presents unique challenges because of the environment involved. From warehouses storing agricultural products to leather processing plants, inventory protection, and worker safety is both important to any business. Different types of water can cause damage, and even the cleanest water, category 1, can turn into the worst, category 3 when contaminants are present. These can happen when clean water is mixed or combined with another source of category 3 water, even if it is not causing any damage by itself (such as sewer water) or when bags of previously dry substances such as fertilizers or pesticides become saturated, and their contents leach into the water.
The damage to your inventory can also rapidly multiply. When products at the bottom of a stack can be a conduit for water by wicking it upwards toward other product that has not been damaged, it’s common sense to get those products on top removed to a safer location. We have team members who can provide this service while our technicians work in other areas, protecting your business from increased inventory loss.
Stacked bags of concrete and other dry products that are designed to be mixed with water, oil, or other liquid just prior to use may seem to be in saleable condition until they are examined on their undersides where water has accumulated. These ruined items need to be removed and accounted for on inventory loss sheets. For insurance purposes, all products need to be re-inventoried and noted as to their condition before the conclusion of our restoration work.
After you've made the initial call to us, we can begin the restoration process. Returning your business to normal operations is important, and we understand the complexities involved in keeping your employees safe while protecting your business's bottom line.

The prospect of having mold remediation specialists enter your home and set up decontamination areas is the stuff of science fiction movies for the most part. If you have never experienced extensive mold damage before, it will be an entirely new process. And yes, it can look a little strange at first.
The reality, however, is that containment booths and decontamination areas are a lot less dramatic than they seem. They are very common, and they really are not designed to protect homeowners at all. The primary purpose of mold containment is to protect the property. Mold damage in homes can spread very quickly if left unchecked.
This guide to the containment procedures used by SERVPRO will tell you a little more about what to expect.
What Does Containment Look Like?
The level of containment will depend entirely on the extent of the problem. Usually, however, we only set up small areas and cause minimal disruption to daily routines. If the mold damage is spreading across a bedroom wall, for example, the SERVPRO team may need to establish a containment perimeter around the room.
While this does mean that you will not be able to enter, there is no danger to worry about. Containment prevents mold spores from being carried out of the space and into other areas of the home. The technicians will wear special PPE suits and footwear, which are treated to neutralize spores every time that they exit the perimeter.
There will be clear polyethylene sheets set up around the affected area. They may be hung over doorways, across carpets, and along ceilings in some cases. If items or materials are removed from the containment space, they will be wrapped in this plastic first. Once again, it can look a little strange, but the SERVPRO team will discuss any concerns that you might have.
What Happens Inside the Containment Area?
The processes carried out inside the containment area are no different to those that are used on any other mold remediation job. The use of polyethylene sheets simply helps to maintain certain drying conditions. The technicians will set up dehumidifiers, negative air movers, and possibly ozone generators to deal with the source of the damp.
It may be necessary to keep some of the machines (such as fans) running constantly over a period of days. You will be informed of this, and the experts will be on site regularly to check progress.
Don’t let mold and mold damage take over your home. Get in touch with the experts at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz. We are experienced, highly skilled, and provide excellent customers service.
Why Trusting a Restoration Professional After a Fire Is So Important
Making Fire & Water damage, "Like it never even happened."
Because of the convection pattern that flames typically form during ignition, smoky residue saturates every opening. The soot constructs up in layers that may end up being solidified and tough to eliminate which is another reason to leave the cleaning to a specialist. When the cleaning teams do arrive, they promptly different salvageable items from charred debris, taking the things creating the strongest odors out for cleaning.
Following a fire, wall surface areas can be harmed by soot. Non-water based cleaners need to be used to remove soot from walls. These kinds of chemicals should be handled by a specialist due to the fumes and toxicity. Water-based cleaning items can cause spots to bleed into plaster walls which is why a trained specialist should be left to deal with these chemicals. Most importantly, a restoration effort reduces the after-effects a blaze can have on the health of those who return in.
If a homeowner does not have the property restored by a professional, the results can be found later on down the line. To an untrained eye they might believe the issue has been fixed, they experience the remaining impacts of indoor air pollution for numerous months later on in the form of increased respiratory discomfort.
Companies such as SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz are leading experts in fire restoration. They are trained to help remove your belongings as well as cleaning and storing them until your property has been restored to its original condition.

Flash Flooding Tips, Water Damage Safety
When Disaster strikes let SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz make it, "Like it Never Even Happened"!
- Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
- Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk.
- Consider installing "check valves" to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.
- If feasible, construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering the building and seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds.
- What to do before a flood.
(Excerpted from ready.gov )
- Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.
- If you must prepare to evacuate, you should do the following:
- Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so. Disconnect electrical appliances. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
- Secure your home. If you have time, bring in outdoor furniture. Move essential items to an upper floor.
- Be aware of stream, drainage channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these areas with or without typical warnings such as rain clouds or heavy rain.
- If you have to leave your home, remember these evacuation tips:
- Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
- Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be swept away quickly.
- Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams, rivers or creeks, particularly during threatening conditions
Should I Use Bleach to Clean Up Mold?
Mold problem? Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100
- The key to mold control is moisture control.
- Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
- Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
- Absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. Mold can grow on or fill in the empty spaces and crevices of porous materials, so the mold may be difficult or impossible to remove completely.
- Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold (see discussions: What to Wear When Cleaning Moldy Areas and Hidden Mold).
- Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
- If you are unsure about how to clean an item, or if the item is expensive or of sentimental value, you may wish to consult a specialist. Specialists in furniture repair, restoration, painting, art restoration and conservation, carpet and rug cleaning, water damage, and fire or water restoration are commonly listed in phone books. Be sure to ask for and check references. Look for specialists who are affiliated with professional organizations.
Should I use bleach?
Biocides are substances that can destroy living organisms. The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup. There may be instances, however, when professional judgment may indicate its use (for example, when immune-compromised individuals are present). In most cases, it is not possible or desirable to sterilize an area; a background level of mold spores will remain - these spores will not grow if the moisture problem has been resolved. If you choose to use disinfectants or biocides, always ventilate the area and exhaust the air to the outdoors. Never mix chlorine bleach solution with other cleaning solutions or detergents that contain ammonia because toxic fumes could be produced.
Please note: Dead mold may still cause health effects in some people, so it is not enough to simply kill the mold, it must also be removed.
“Mold Removal” vs. Remediation
Mold damage? No Problem, SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz can help!
What’s the Difference?
Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy.
A qualified restoration company understands the science behind mold and mold growth. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business. Mold remediation focuses on getting mold levels back to normal, natural levels.
Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same.
- Step 1: Emergency Contact 323-667-3100
- Step 2: Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
- Step 3: Mold Containment
- Step 4: Air Filtration
- Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
- Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings
- Step 7: Restoration
Signs of Mold? Call Today 323-667-3100
When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants and have the potential to cause other health effects.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
How Much Does Mold Remediation Cost
Mold Infestation? Let the pros at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz make it, "Like it never even happened."
Factors Affecting Mold Remediation Cost
If the mold is confined to a fairly small area, you may be able to clean it yourself. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency publishes guidelines for mold cleanup. However, if the damage covers more than about 10 square feet or the HVAC system is infected, you should hire a professional mold and mildew removal service.
The biggest factors that affect the mold remediation cost are the additional repair necessary to prevent mold from returning. If mold growth is extensive, it can cause structural damage to wood-framed buildings, and you may need to find alternate housing until the reformation is completed.
Price Range for Mold Cleanup
Mold removal from a residential crawlspace costs between $500 and $4000, but the final cost of a typical mold cleanup project usually comes up to $2000 and $6000. Mold is rarely confined to one area of a home. It tends to spread into the walls and ventilation system, making it difficult to remove.
A thorough mold inspection should be done both before and after a mold cleanup project. Some companies offer a free inspection, but industry experts recommend having the inspection done by a third party.

Your Business Needs to Look and Smell Inviting after Fire Damage Restoration
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz helps commercial buildings get back in business after a disaster
Presentation is important for any business, and doubly so in the service sector. If you own or manage a store or restaurant, your customers will likely be discouraged or even scared off by obvious signs of damage and visual blemishes on your property. SERVPRO knows first-hand that some of the most thorough visual damages to a building can come from fires, whether through the burn itself or any associated events and factors. These blemishes and issues are commonly cleaned up by our restoration teams, to ensure that once a company's doors get back open, they stay open.
Burns and char easily rank among the most visible types of commercial fire damage immediately giving away to any observer the fact that a fire has burned in the area. Blackened or darkened materials, even if they have no other major damage beyond discoloration, can still be resource and time-intensive to cover up, often requiring a wide cleaning and repainting job to make sure colors blend well and no burn material remains.
Smoke and Ash
smoke and ash leave a profound impact on a building, to both the sight and smell of anyone nearby. Smoke is a pervasive scent and easily noticeable in most cases, but can also leave behind a great deal of smearing and coat surfaces. Depending on the type of smoke and conditions of this fire, this may be a relatively easy cleanup job, or a more thorough repainting may be in order.
SERVPRO can also help to restore mild structural damage caused by a fire, rebuilding walls, floors, supports, and other elements of a building if they have been burned through or collapsed on. We always aim to restore before replacing, and in this way can potentially save you thousands in reconstruction costs where they are not necessary.
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz helps businesses to get back on track after a disaster. Give us a call at 323-667-3100.
Your HVAC System & Water Damage
With frequent use of our heating and air conditioning systems, they should be monitored for any potential damage that can lead to future problems.
In the Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz area, we are approaching season changes from summer to fall, then winter. Our present use of an HVAC system is to keep us cool until we switch over to our heating environment. With the constant use of our heating and air conditioning systems, they should be monitored for any potential damage that can lead to significant problems.
For instance, a clogged condensate drain pipe can make an HVAC system drain pan to overflow. The drain pipe is one of the most frequent causes of water removal repairs in Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz. Drain pipe fittings can become disconnected from the unit and allow the condensate to drain through the ceiling to the floor. A malfunctioning or dirty pump can also cause extensive water leakage.
When the drain pipe becomes clogged, the water will quickly back up the line and then into the drain pan. The water fills up the pan until it overflows. A malfunctioning condensate pump can cause water leakage from heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, flooding the basement or attic. Due to the continuous presence of water, mold can grow inside the unit, causing it to become clogged.
Additional damages caused by heating and air conditioning units, involves wet soggy carpets, ceiling collapse or drywall damage. Other issues that can create water damage from an HVAC system includes low refrigerant, no-trap and air vent in the drain line and condensate buildup in a ductwork system that is not properly insulated. In the event you suffer water damage give SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz a call at 323-667-3100.
When properly maintained, your HVAC system provides a comfortable indoor environment year-round. Our professional technicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Water Damage Restoration by SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz
Keep Calm & Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz for all of your water damage needs.
Water damage can happen under many different circumstances, but the worst ones are those that occur because of harm to the exterior of the home during a storm. Trees and even downed power line poles can cause extreme damage to your home, and allow water to enter. This water can create hazards immediately. Even after the danger has passed from electric shock, water can seep throughout your home, creating the right conditions for future damage to develop.
Unresolved Water from Storms can Create Future Problems through Water Damage
When water damage affects your home water damage may appear slowly. While you may have noticed the water on the exterior surfaces on the interior of your home, as on walls and floors, water may have settled on the interiors of these structures. Walls made of drywall can crumble after being saturated with water and allowed to dry naturally. Water left on drywall weakens it considerably, even if the damage is not visible. Hardwood floors and stairwells made of wood can buckle, causing carpeting to become rumpled and hazardous.
In addition to these issues, mold can also begin to grow within 48 hours, only two days, from the time the water was deposited by the storm. We can pack up your belongings for removal to a dry location so we can clean and sort through them. Sorting involves categorizing salvageable and non-salvageable items, with unsalvageable ones being listed (CCIS) on an inventory sheet for your insurance needs.
We Know How to Prevent Future Problems in Your Home's Structure
In addition to cleaning your belongings and restoring those we can to their original state, we can also set up equipment that is designed to prevent mold from getting a foothold in your home. Water extraction to dry those structures that have become saturated by storm and rain water, in addition to drying heaters and high-powered air circulation fans will stop mold from growing. If water were allowed to stand for extended periods of time, as is common when there are major storm cells passing through an area, we would use additional types of equipment. These can include air scrubbers that will remove any mold (spores) that has already begun to spread throughout your home. If your heating or air conditioning unit ran during this time, we highly recommend that we scrape the interior of your ducts and then vacuum the debris away with our HEPA vacuums. We want to get your home back to pre-damage condition, “Like it Never Even Happened” so you and your family can get back to your normal routines.
If you own a home that has been damaged by storms or suffered other types of water damage, please call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at (323) 667-3100. We are available 24/7 to assist you. We respond quickly and can answer any questions you have about your particular situation.
Storm Waters Can Cause Major Damage
Call SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz for extracting storm water
Businesses can suffer much less damage from a severe storm than a residence and still have to close their doors permanently. Each hour and day of clean-up are more important to saving not just a building, but an income and a contributor to the community as well.
A building can lose its functionality and close its doors permanently after a few days of water damage has ruined equipment beyond repair. SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz has the training not just to respond quickly, but to properly clean and restore a facility to bring it back in line with city health codes, if at all possible. Storm-induced flooding does not have to have a lasting effect on your business.
The first step is getting rid of the water. For standing water, even in a large kitchen and customer service area, our technicians use commercial grade pumps to remove inches and even a foot of water in a matter of hours. With the visible water gone, our response team can tackle the next two items: drying out property and hidden water extraction.
Expensive industrial items such as commercial ovens are usually above most high water points but can suffer damage in a massive plumbing failure. Technicians must completely dry the electronics and heating elements before allowing the owner to use them again. Since it is not possible to disassemble these industrial appliances without violating warranties or possibly damaging them further, our technicians use commercial space heaters and dehumidifiers.
Both equipment items draw out moisture from the surrounding air and off of nearby surfaces. These techniques leave a dry surface without the chance of threads from towels or pieces of sponge accidentally being left behind to contaminate the next batch of cupcakes.
As this happens, other technicians dry out the building itself. Water extraction tools draw out moisture from floors, walls, and property items such as display cases. We accomplish this using commercial grade extraction wands that combine heat and vacuum to pull water droplets from between and underneath floor tiles and sections of concrete. Response team members also use the same heaters and dehumidifiers in corners to speed up drying walls, cabinets, and underneath counters.
SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz understands that every hour your business is closed means income lost and customers go un-served. Count on a strong effort from a component of the SERVPRO large-loss storm team. Despite an improving economy, small business owners are still operating on narrow margins and even a weekend lost can mean not making payroll or loan payments. To prevent this from happening, call us at (323) 667-3100 to restore your business and your livelihood.
Safety and Mitigation of Storm Damaged Possessions Are Crucial
Safety first when it comes to storm floods!
When natural floods occur, the essential boundaries between humans and the elements are broken down. The pressure and force of moving water are often enough to cause serious damage to purification and sewage systems. In the most extreme cases, chemicals and toxic waste end up in the floodwaters which infiltrate homes.
This is why it's really important for homeowners to seek professional advice. At SERVPRO, we deal with incidents of severe water damage on a daily basis. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster. Our job is not just to reverse the storm damage and restore your home to its original condition; we'll also make it safe again. This means eliminating all traces of toxic materials in the water and your home.
If your home has recently flooded, there are a few things that you can do to keep yourself safe until the SERVPRO team arrives.
Find Alternative Shelter
If possible, find a clean, dry place to stay while the flooding in your home is being repaired. It isn't healthy to remain among damp furniture, carpets, or drywall, even if there is no standing water. There may be bacteria, pathogens, and chemicals on the walls and floors. Call SERVPRO, explain the severity of the flooding and we'll make our way to the property as quickly as possible.
Keep Your Hands Clean
If you have had contact with floodwater, you need to wash your hands thoroughly. Do this every time you get your hands wet and then leave the site. Don't prepare or touch food until you've washed with soap and water. If the flooding isn't too severe, you may be able to move items outside of the property and away from the saturation points. Where possible, store them away from unaffected possessions, as they may need disinfecting.
Drink Bottled Water
SERVPRO strongly advises you to steer clear of the main water supply, until we have verified (in conjunction with local authorities) that it is safe to drink. Flooding can infect the water supply with chemicals and toxins. All homeowners should drink bottled water or, at least, boil their water before drinking.
Reach Out for Help
Flood repair and restoration experts from SERVPRO provide more than just practical help. We are a valuable source of information and support. Our technicians can tell you everything that you need to know about flood damage restoration. They will be frank and honest about what can be salvaged (usually a lot) and what is too degraded to be saved. They will work closely with you to inventory your possessions and clean, restore, and repair as many items as possible. If you have insurance coverage, the final disposition of storm damaged items is your decision to make.
All forms of flooding can be stressful, but natural flooding has a tendency to make homeowners feel helpless. With the support of SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz, you don't have to be. We can help you take back control and get repairs started quickly. Call us 24/7 on (323) 667-3100.

Sewage Cleanup & Restoration
This is an example of a sewer back up that would be considered a Category 3. SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz was called to clean up.
Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage. Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Here is some helpful information to make sure you are prepared for property emergencies; most likely, your insurance carrier does not guarantee the repairs/services provided to your property. Also, don’t assume you must hire the company your insurance carrier suggests. Holiday Home Safety
Happy Holidays from all of us at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz!
Decorating your home or business for the holiday season can be a fun activity. But watch out for any fire hazards that can quickly lead to a holiday mishap. Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and get rid of any with worn cords, loose connections, and/or cracked lamp holders. When switching bulbs out, unplug the light string and be sure to match wattage and voltage to the original bulb. Always make sure to turn off all holiday lights when you are away from your home/business and/or when you are going to bed. Lastly, try to purchase a freshly cut tree, as they are less likely to catch on fire. Keep your Christmas tree away from candles and with enough water. Happy Holidays from all of us at SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz!
Keep your home protected while traveling: 4 Essential Tips
Keep your home protected while traveling: 4 Essential Tips
Murphy’s Law when traveling: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, while you’re traveling away from home”. Having to return from a memorable trip to learn that something has seriously gone wrong at home can be distressing. But following is a list of essential tips that will allow you to be stress free while you sit back and enjoy your getaway!
- Keep curtains open!
You may think that leaving the curtains closed may prevent others from peeking inside your home. However, it is recommended that you leave some of your curtains opened (make sure to keep expensive items out of sight). If your curtains are unusually closed for a long period of time it could become obvious that no one is home.
- Keep lights on or off?
Leaving the lights on in your home while you’re away may end up costing you more than your mortgage! It is recommended that you purchase an automatic light switch timer so that your lights will switch on and off at certain times during the day/night making it appear as though someone is actually home.
- Pull the plug!
It is recommended that you unplug all appliances including, your TV, toaster oven, etc. while you’re away. This may help prevent a power surge which can cause a fire hazard.
This applies to those that reside in very cold regions. Pipes may be in danger of freezing so it is recommended that you have someone check in on your faucets while you’re away. If very little to no water comes out when turning the faucets on this is an indication that the pipes may be frozen! Take the time to make sure your pipes are properly insulated to avoid this from happening. Finally, show your key-holder (friend/neighbor) the location of the water main shut-off in case a pipe breaks.
These preventative measures only take a few minutes to complete and can help you keep your home safe from broken pipes(flood hazard), home invasions(property loss/damage), power surges(fire hazard), and more in your absence. In the event that you suffer a loss such as these, please do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Hollywood Hills/Los Feliz at 323-667-3100 for all of your restoration needs!

Leak Proof your Home/Business to Prevent Water Damage
This property suffered water damage due to a water heater leak located on the ceiling.
Now that fall is officially here, it is time to prepare your home and/or business for cold and rainy weather. But keeping water out of your property can be quite complicated. For example; plumbing issues can cause moisture and even light rain can cause leaks through the roof, walls, foundation etc. When this occurs the moisture eventually reaches the porous materials in your home, which may then lead to structural damage and other humidity concerns. It is important to note that if left untreated you also run the risk of mold growth. For these reasons it is highly recommended that you take proper care of any and all potential areas prone to leaks such as the following;
- Inspection of the plumbing pipe(s) system
- Inspection of the roof/chimney
- Inspection of the water heater
- Check attic insulation
- Clean the gutters
- Repair any cracks
- Seal proof doors and windows
- Check exterior faucets and irrigation system
After all, “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”.
